Shoka was his fiancé who died while he was away. Her sorrow due to his absence was so great that she could not sleep peacefully even in death. The Shikkonki demon, lured by this restlessness, quickly possessed her and gave her the power to ‘heal’ the dead. In reality the person was more of a zombie than anything. During a failed attempt to kill Miaka, Myou Juan appeared with Tasuki and Nuriko. With Miaka and the three Suzaku seishi captured, it was up to Myou Juan to rescue them. In a moment of clarity, Shoka told him to kill her and the monster. He agreed and used his healing power to destroy the creature and ended her false life. He took her body and buried her once more, but this time she remained at peace.
Tama is his little feline friend who gets more screen time than Mitsukake. He is Mitsukake’s best friend and confidant during the difficult times following Shoka’s death. Incredibly clever, Tama is able to help the Seishi in some difficult situations. Because he is small and not a Seishi, he can often go where the others cannot. Although he looks a bit like Chichiri (and he ends up living with him when Mitsukake dies), he was named Tama, after Tamahome, by Miaka. Tasuki notes that when Tama is offered a fish, he behaves the same way as Tamahome when he is offered money.
Chichiri was the fourth Seishi to be found and happens to be a Gemini in the truest sense. On the one side he can be serious and mature. He’s one of the wisest of the group and often is the one that Miaka goes to when she needs advice. He also is very perceptive of other’s feelings. Then there is this other childish and playful side that is very cute. He frequently goes into super deform. Of all the seishi, Mitsukake is probably closest to him, perhaps because they are closest in age and maturity level.
Chiriko is the last seishi to be found as is usually as looked over as poor Mitsukake. He is a student studying to get into politics. Around the time when he was taking the second stage of the required test he sensed that the Suzaku seven were in danger. He was able to save them from Amiboshi who had been posing as Chiriko. He later kills himself to keep Miboshi from killing the others when he possesses him.
Hotohori is the emperor of Konan and the second seishi to be revealed. He is very elegant and noble. He is nothing like what most consider a traditional emperor. He is young for one thing, and he usually doesn’t talk down to people. When on duty he wears his hair up, but when not acting in an official position, he wears it down. He fell in love with Miaka because she would be the one person who could love him for himself rather than his position, but she was already Tamahome’s. He eventually marries a woman who looks a lot like Nuriko, but Nakago kills him in battle before his son is born.
Nuriko is a man who dresses like a woman and is the third seishi to be revealed. He lives in the palace of the emperor Hotohori and was in love with him. At first everybody actually thinks he is a girl (he doesn’t tell them anything different) but Miaka accidentally discovers his true gender. A cruel and evil Miaka counterpart made to test her reveals this little secret. Ashitare kills Nuriko while they were trying to find the Shinzaho. Instead of lying still until Mitsukake could come and help him, he moved the boulder that was in front of the entrance to the hiding place of the Shinzaho.

If it wasn't for a lie he told, the Suzaku Seishi might not have found Mitsukake as quickly as they did. Mitsukake is forced to heal him without using his powers after he goes with Chichiri and Miaka to Kouto to find Tamahome but ends up getting heavily injured. Of course he wines and complains the whole time. When Tamahome returns to normal Tasuki pays him back by stomping on his head!
Miaka is a girl from the real world (so to speak) who is pulled into a book “The Universe of the Four Gods” where she becomes Suzaku no Miko. She must find all seven of the Suzaku no Seishi and summon the Beast God Suzaku who will grant her three wishes, but, as is true of all magic, there is a catch. Of the 14 seishi of Suzaku and Seiryuu five fall for her (in one way or another) and three try to rape her. Then you have to consider the fact that one is still a kid, one is a woman, and one is a wolf. That means that the only two people who possibly could but don’t… have issues concerning Miaka are Chichiri and Mitsukake. Go figure.
